Structural Biophysics

The Structural Biophysics Group is concerned with understanding at the molecular level the mechanical, optical and hydrodynamic properties of the cornea, sclera, crystalline lens and lens zonules.

Research projects vary from the elucidation of normal structure and function through to the causes of visual loss associated with a range of pathological conditions (including keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, bullous keratopathy and cataract) and surgical treatments (including corneal scarring and haze following photorefractive keratectomy or laser in situ keratomileusis).

Methodology

  • X-ray scattering
  • electron microscopy
  • shg confocal microscopy
  • ELISA
  • biomechanical testing

Current Research Projects

  • Project 1
The ultrastructure of the cornea and limbus
  • Project 2
    Ultrastructural changes in pathological corneas
  • Project 3
Understanding corneal transparency and the structural causes of its loss
  • Project 4
Ageing and glycation in ocular tissues
  • Project 5
    Wound healing following ocular surgery
