My lab explores the functional properties of mammalian rod and cone photoreceptors using the mouse retina as a model system. Our current focus is on the strength and regulatory potential of connexin–mediated electrical coupling between rods and cones, which we investigate by peforming patch–clamp recordings from single mouse cones. Using this technique we are able to compare light responses and membrane currents of the same neuron in different mouse strains, as well as observe the changes evoked by acute pharmacological manipulation.

Methodology

  • Patch clamp recordings of rods, cones and bipolar cells in slices of the dark–adapted mouse retina.
