ARVO Special Recognition Award 2010 goes to Christina Fasser

The ‘Gateway to Vision Research’ and the Steering Committee of the ‘European Vision Institute’ and ‘EuroVisionNet’  is proud to announce that Ms Christina Fasser has been selected as a recipient of a SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD by ARVO -  the  Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

We congratulate Ms Fasser on this award which is richly deserved and is a fitting  international recognition of the years of dedicated service that she has given to fighting retinal vision loss.

The Award will be presented at the 2010 ARVO Congress. This annual congress is the most prestigious international Ophthalmology congress and is held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.

Christina Fasser is President of Retina Suisse and Retina International as well as vice-chair of the Swiss National Council of and for the blind. She began her career as an advertisement manager for international advertising agencies. From 1978 to 1990, she worked at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology on various projects designed to aid the developing world, especially in the field of Food Science.

Affected by Retinitis Pigmentosa, Ms. Fasser became involved in the RP Society as a founding member and has been its president since 1986.

In 1992, she was elected president of Retina International (formerly the International Retinitis Pigmentosa Association). Retina International has at present over 30 member organizations, in which more than 300,000 individuals affected by retinal degenerative diseases are active. These organizations collect annually more than 30 million US dollars to be invested into research. In her capacity as president of Retina International, Ms. Fasser is involved in promoting research on national and international levels and coordinating the efforts made by individual countries.
