The Best Websites 2011 in Vision Research and Ophthalmology

Image Best Website 2011

Why do people browse the Internet?

One main reason is to look for quality information and exchange of ideas. A good website gives visitors what they are looking for, as good communication is essential for science and health care. Nominations for the Best Websites 2011 were accepted worldwide from May 15th, 2011 until June 30th, 2011 with the only restriction that the topic had to be in the wider field of Vision Research and Ophthalmology.

All members of our community were eligible to submit their nominations in an open and transparent process. All nominations were judged by an interdisciplinary panel according to fixed criteria. However, it was not an easy task to choose the TOP 10 out of numerous nominations. All the more our congratulations go to the TOP 10 winners - well done -!

These websites were successful by translating complex science into understandable information and providing meaningful context.

Four representatives under the Top 10 are primarily content-driven web pages (NO 1: Webvision; NO 2: Atlas of Ophthalmology; NO 4: Gateway to Vision Research in Europe; and NO 10: RETNET).

Four websites of institutions had very good scores (NO 3: National Eye Institute; NO 5: Institut de la Vision; NO 7: The Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology and NO 8: AIBILI).

The Top 10 list is completed by a patient-related foundation (NO 6: Foundation Fighting Blindness Canada) and an international organization (NO 9: International Council of Ophthalmology). Five websites are hosted in Europe, four in the USA, and one in Canada. The advantage of websites entirely in English was balanced by additional scores for bi-multilingual sites; however according to the predominance of English as the ‘Lingua Scientia’ in the life sciences negative scores were inevitable for sites entirely in other languages (e.g. nominations of websites entirely in Chinese, Spanish, German, Italian and Dutch…).

Evaluation Criteria

An independent panel judged the nominations according to the following criteria:

  1. Present quality content (3x)
  2. Update information frequently (2x)
  3. Are easy to use (1x)
  4. Attractive design and presentation (2x)

Thank you to all contributors for their meaningful and excellent nominations and to the Evaluation Panel for their difficult task to rank the TOP 10 websites 2011 in Vision Research and Ophthalmology.
