Current Research Projects

  1. “Application of adaptive optics technology to clinical ophthalmology”.
    The project aims to understand the potential of adaptive optics imaging for early detection of retinal diseases. The work is done in collaboration with the CNR-IPCF Institute (Eng. G. Lombardo, Italy), the Applied Optics Group (Dr. Nicholas Devaney, Ireland) and the University of Wisconsin (Prof. Joseph Carroll, USA)
  2. “Nanotechnology platforms for drug delivery nanotechnology”.
    The project aims to develop new treatment modalities for the cure of keratoconus. The work is done in collaboration with the CNR-IPCF Institute (Eng. G. Lombardo, Italy). Project PON 2007-2013 “Nanoftalm”.
  3. “Innovative method for the treatment of total limbal stem cells deficiency (LSCD) trhough a tissue-engineered hemicornea”.
    The aim of the project is to evaluate a new single-stage approach for the treatment of visual impairment due to corneal opacities in patients with unilateral LSCD. The work is done in collaboration with the Veneto Eye Bank Foundation (Italy). Project GR2010.
  4. “Optimization of femtosecond laser corneal incisions for cataract surgery”.
    The aim of the project is to optimize the use of femtosecond laser incisions for cataract surgery.

Methodology

  1. Adaptive optics retinal imaging is performed using a flood-illumination retinal camera prototype;
  2. Laboratory studies are performed at various scales of observation, using optical and scanning microscopy techniques, including E-SEM, AFM, SFA, two-photon microscopy, OBM.
  3. The bio-engineered corneal tissue is investigated using two-photon microscopy.
  4. A Scheimpflug camera is used before and after femtosecond tunnel incision of the cornea to characterize the optical and mechanical response of the corneal tissue.
