Visual Physiology Group

Research group of Dr. Liliya Vitanova in Sofia, Bulgaria. Further members of the group are:

  • Dr. E. Popova, MD, PhD
  • Dr. Kupenova, MD, PhD
  • Dr. D. Alexandrova, MD.

All 4 persons are members of the staff of the Department of Physiology and are actively involved in physiology teaching of medical, dental and pharmaceutical students. The research interests of the group are focused mainly on the synaptic transmission in the lower vertebrate retina.

Methodology

  • Recording of electrical activity of distal retina (electroretinogram). Influence of different agonists and antagonists on the synaptic transmission in the distal retina.
  • Recording of electrical activity of proximal retina (discharge of ganglion cells). Influence of different agonists and antagonists on the synaptic transmission in the proximal retina.
  • Immunocytochemical study of the different neurotransmitter systems in the retina.

Cooperations

Cooperation 1:
Visual Research Lab in the Pavlov’e Institute of Physiology. St. Petersburg, Russia (ex- cooperation)

Cooperation 2:
Neuroanatomy Lab, Max-Planck-Institute of Brain Research, Frankfurt/ Main, Germany (ex- cooperation)

Current Research Projects
