The Winners of the Picture Competition 2016

First Place

Contributor:

Almudena Íñigo-Portugués

Institution:

Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante. UMH-CSIC

Country:

Spain

Short Description:

A confocal micrograph showing the immunostaining of corneal nerve fibers in the whole-mounted cornea of mouse. Axons immunolabeled with tubulin III β.

Second Place

Contributor:

Matthew Pilgrim

Institution:

UCL Institute of Ophthalmology

Country:

UK

Short Description:

A high resolution scanning electron micrograph of the hydroxyapatite spherules which form within sub-retinal pigment epithelial deposits that are the characteristic lesion of age-related macular degeneration.

Third Place

Contributor:

Arnold Szabo

Institution:

Semmelweis University, Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology

Country:

Hungary

Short Description:

Confocal image of the human retina. The section was stained against recoverin (green), PKC alpha (red) and ChAT (gray). The nuclei are blue.

Fourth Place

Contributor:

Joseph Territo

Institution:

Retina Associates of Western New Yourk

Country:

USA

Short Description:

Idiopathic Macular Telangiectasia

Fifth Place

Contributor:

Gavin Taylor

Institution:

Lund University

Country:

Sweden

Short Description:

Microtomography reveals the external and internal structure of the many individual facets in the compound eye of an orchid bee, Euglossa imperialis.

Sixth Place

Contributor:

Ryan Imperio

Institution:

Duke Eye Center

Country:

USA

Short Description:

X-linked retinitis pigmentosa vs choroideremia. Fluorescein angiography reveals diffuse atrophy of the choriocapillaris and RPE with sparing of the central macula. Images were captured using Optos T200x.

Seventh Place

Contributor:

Jonathan Brett

Institution:

Eye Research Group Oxford

Country:

UK

Short Description:

It is estimated that globally 285 million people are visually impaired, 246 million people have low vision and 39 million are blind. I thought that combining the visual language of a mid-phase fluorescein angiogram of a retina and the world map would be highlight the issues of global sight loss.

Eighth Place

Contributor:

Victor Meseguer

Institution:

Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante. UMH-CSIC

Country:

Spain

Short Description:

“Sparkling corneal fireworks”: A montage composed of confocal microscopy images of cold thermoreceptors from a living mouse whole cornea. The image was taken from a transgenic mouse expressing EYFP in corneal nerve fibers under the control of TRPM8 regulatory sequences (Trpm8-EYFP mouse). For montage purposes, we used the image at different pseudo-colors and sizes.

Nineth Place

Contributor:

Nipan Yodmanee

Institution:

Mettapracharak (watraikhing)Hospital Nakhonpathom Thailand

Country:

Thailand

Short Description:

FFA ICG 102 Vasculitis

Tenth Place

Contributor:

Christina Schwarz

Institution:

University of Rochester

Country:

USA

Short Description:

Structure and function of photoreceptors in the living macaque eye - The near-infrared reflectance image (left) mainly contains structural information of photoreceptor mosaic, whereas the corresponding two-photon excitation fluorescence image (right) interrogates visual cycle activity. The main source of fluorescence is most likely retinol. The visual cycle of one cone photoreceptor appears to be compromised, manifesting in diminished fluorescence. 135µm x 180µm
