The Young Researcher Vision Camp 2017

Young Academics have to understand that connections are essential for a successful career. That’s the lessons to be learnt at the Young Researcher Vision Camp (YRVC).

Following the great success of the previous Young Researcher Vision Camps in 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016, the Young Researcher Vision Camp took place from June 30th until July 2nd, 2017.

Again, we met at Castle Wildenstein, the unique location high over the banks of the river Danube. Consistent with the previous event, we had maintained the main features for this edition of the Vision Camp:

  • A broad spectrum of major areas of Basic and Applied Eye Research and Ophthalmology
  • Talks will be given exclusively by doctoral students (Early-stage Researchers)
  • Sessions will be chaired by post-docs (Experienced Researchers)

A focus of this year’s YRVC was to learn networking for a successful career. Being bright and studious is not enough to make it to the top of the career ladder. This not only applies to jobs in the private sector, but also to academic positions. Apart from performance and productivity, above all cooperation and network relations determine the path of careers.

Furthermore several keynote lectures were held by: (1) Christian Grimm about “Hypoxic Signaling in the Retina”, (2) Helen May-Simera on “Primary Cilia in the Visual System” and last not least (3) Christer Saefholm talked about “How to shape your Career in Industry?”

Again, the nine scientific sessions chaired by the colleagues J. Roger, G. Taylor, F. Paquet-Durand, T. Schubert, A. den Hollander, B. de la Cerda Haynes, A., Ohlendorf and A. Garanto were absolute highlights with extreme high scientific standards. Congratulation to all chairs and their respective speakers.

Another highlight was the poster session and the three awardees of the Zeiss Scientific Poster Awards 2017

Very interesting were the evening excursion with the ranger in the valley of the Danube and the tour on hidden secrets of the old castle. Most impressive was the visit at the site of experimental archaeologists at Campus Galli.
