A warholesque montage of mouse AII amacrine cells, crucial interneurons of the rod pathway. This cell was dye-injected, and the confocal micrograph was color-coded for depth in the retina using various color schemes.

Upon noxious stimuli, microgial cells upregulate pro-inflammatory mediators and produce large amounts of nitric oxide by upregulating the inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS).The picture shows a purified retinal microglial cells in culture (identified with an antibody anti-CD11b, red) and its expression iNOS (identified in green). Nuclei are shown in blue. The image was acquired using a Zeiss LSM 710 confocal on an Axio Observer Z1 microscope using an EC Plan-Neofluar 40x/1.30 Oil DIC M27 objective.

Microglia-mediated inflammatory response is a common link in the development of retinal degenerative diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. The picture shows cultured retinal microglial cells (identified with an antibody anti-CD11b, red) after incubation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to trigger microglia activation. The incubation with LPS leads to increased expression of the inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS; green). Nuclei are shown in blue. The image was acquired using a Zeiss LSM 710 confocal on an Axio Observer Z1 microscope using an EC Plan-Neofluar 40x/1.30 Oil DIC M27 objective.
