At this year’s ceremony of the ‘Eva Luise and Horst Köhler Foundation’ Research Award for Rare Diseases in Berlin, Franz Badura, an active member of the German patient organization ‚Pro Retina‘ for people with visual disabilities met Her Royal Highness Doña Letizia, Princess of Asturias, Princess of Viana, Princess of Girona, Duchess of Montblanc, Countess of Cervera and Lady of Balaguer. Franz Badura, a professional musician, who suffers from severe retinitis pigmentosa was invited by the First Lady of Germany, Mrs. Luise Köhler, the wife of the Federal President Dr. Horst Köhler to augment the ceremony with his magnificent musical performance.

Franz Badura is also organizing the forthcoming 6th PRO RETINA Research Colloquium to be held in Potsdam from April 9th to 10th, 2010, which is supported by the PRO RETINA patient organization and the PRO RETINA Foundation Fighting Blindness. As in previous meetings, the 2010 event will focus on research in the field of retinal degenerations but the particular emphasis this year lies on past achievements and future strategic directions in the quest to fight blinding disorders. Rather provocatively, this year’s meeting is entitled „Ten Years into the New Century, Where Do We Go From Here?" The topic is meant as an incentive as well as a challenge to explore future strategies and goals based on past successes and accomplishments.
