Leopold Schmetterer joins IOB as Visiting Professor Translational Retinal Research

“We are very happy to have Leopold joining us as Visiting Professor, while keeping his affiliation in Singapore. Of note, the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), where Leo serves as the research director, is one of the leading institutes in the world. His expertise in imaging, retina, glaucoma, and dry eye syndrome, and his wide network will help our teams of molecular and clinical researchers in their activities to translate findings into clinical applications and new diagnostic and therapeutic developments,” says Hendrik Scholl, IOB Director of the Clinical Research Center.

Professor Leopold Schmetterer’s research interests include a wide array of sub-specialities in ophthalmology including imaging, glaucoma, medical retina and dry eye syndrome. He has graduated from the Technical University of Vienna.

In 1989 he finished his PhD. He is Scientific Director and Head of Ocular Imaging at Singapore Eye Research Institute and Professor of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering at the Nanyang Technological University. Until 08/2016 he was chairing the Ophthalmic Pharmacology at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the Medical University of Vienna. In addition, he had an affiliation with the Center of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering. Leopold Schmetterer held a post doc position at the Institute de Recherche en Ophthalmologie in Sion and was a guest Professor at EPFL in Lausanne.

Leopold Schmetterer is involved in many international societies including EVER (president 2012 and president of the EVER foundation 2014-2016), ARVO (program committee member 2009-2011), ISOPT (program committee member), WOC (program committee member), AOPT. He is a member of many Editorial Boards including Progress of Retinal and Eye Research, Acta Ophthalmologica, Current Eye Research, Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Ophthalmic Research.

Leopold Schmetterer has published more than 350 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has received grant funding of more than 20 Million Euros.
