Research Activities

Over the last 40 years investigations from our group have focussed on structural elements of ocular disease, clinicopathologic correlation and new microsurgical approaches to the anterior segment of the eye:

  1. Oncology: Rhabdomyosarcoma of the iris; Xanthoma of the iris have first been described. Differential diagnosis of melanocytic nevi of the posterior uvea from malignant melanomas was facilitated by morphology and BAB-quantification. Clinical features of Non-Hodgkin-Lymphoma were shown. Blockexcision as procedure of choice for tumors of the anterior uvea involving the angle is demonstrated.
  2. Trauma: Blockexcision for Epithelial Ingrowth was established as the first curative therapy. Unguided amniocentesis is a risk factor for congenital iris cysts. Direct cyclopexy was modified as procedure of choice for persisting ocular hypotony due to cyclodialysis. Clinical signs of endophthalmitis phakoanaphylactica were elaborated as well as endophthalmitis haemogranulomatosa  (with H.E. Völcker et al.). Woundhealing of iris with sutures and after lasers was analyzed.
  3. Infections: Histopathology of zoster ophthalmicus, mykotic keratitis and multiple i.o. infections were shown. Clinical features of mykotic endophthalmitis and intraocular borreliosis have been established.
  4. Corneal Transplantation: Non-mechanical trephination with the Excimer laser 193 nm along metal-masks improves the outcome of optical keratoplasty (with GK Lang, B Seitz and A Langenbucher). Tectonic indications have been refined; feasibility of autologous grafts demonstrated. Monitoring of BAB allows titration of immunosuppressive therapy. Hydrochinon-Keratopathy.
  5. Glaucoma: Quantifications of optic disc size and – alterations help in early diagnosis (with J. Jonas et al.). NO-related choroidal ganglion cells
  6. Pseudoexfoliation (PEX) – syndrome: First established as a generalized disorder of extracellular matrix in our laboratory. New entity of „PEX-keratopathy“ elaborated. Pathomechanism of zonular instability, blood-aqueous-barrier-defects and chronic glaucoma (with U. Schlötzer-Schrehardt et al.).
  7. Others: Controlled arterial hypotony is essential for microsurgical procedures in the „open eye“. Histopathology of ischemic microinfarcts of the optic disc in giant cell arteriitis and arteriosclerosis involve hyaluronic acid from vitreous body.
