Most ophthalmic organisations are associations of health professions in ophthalmology. The organisations vary greatly in their aims and compositions and are structured nationally, on the European scale and internationally covering the whole field of ophthalmology and vision research or specific sub disciplines. Whilst the majority of clinicians are organised in national and international ophthalmic organisations numerous scientists from basic vision research are represented by neighbouring disciplines as e.g. neurobiology, molecular and cellular biology and genetics and their respective societies.
For the vision research community an overview of the existing ophthalmic and related organisations, their objectives and aims may be of increasing importance in terms to foster a true interdisciplinary dialogue and to establish close links and co-operations.
