Vice-President of the EC promotes open science

June 11, 2012

Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the Digital Agenda, gave an opening speech at the Open infrastructures for Open Science meeting in Rome, Italy on 11 April.

The Commissioner was addressing the annual meeting of the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities about the importance of sharing data and making publically funded results available to all to enable the progress of scientific discovery. Kroes gave the example of open access databases such as EMBL and the US GenBank, which double in size every nine months and deliver efficient, practical and important results that would not be possible with separate, closed systems.
