Professor Sascha Fauser supervised a review article presenting the imaging modalities and criteria currently used to detect and quantify fibrosis in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). The study reveals significant heterogeneity in the current characterization of fibrosis. Most frequently, a multi-modal approach is employed, relying on color fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). To establish a consensus definition of fribrosis in nAMD, which is necessary for the development of antifibrotic therapies, the authors propose the use of OCT as the primary modality for fibrosis evaluation. The article also highlights open questions to be discussed in future consensus meetings.
