Mouse mutants affecting eye development and the function of ocular tissues are being characterized in a molecular, functional and morphological manner. Several screens are established to identify new mutants; these screens include Scheimpflug analysis of lens opacities, optical coherence tomography (OCT), eye-size measurements by laser interference biometry, and the virtual optokinetic drum.
New mutations are mapped and molecularly characterized.
Established mutants are characterized in detail under the umbrella of the German Mouse Clinic (GMC; www.mouseclinic.de/).
Additionally, we are characterizing also families suffering from cataracts; we are also involved in the epidemiology of eye diseases within the framework of KORA.
