A review on corneal stromal stem cells

Professor Claus Cursiefen co-authored a review article that presents corneal stromal stem cells (CSSCs) as a new therapeutic target for corneal injuries and diseases. Corneal impairments are prominent causes of blindness. Since access to corneal transplantation is challenging, research may focus on regenerative ophthalmology to offer an alternative strategy. This review article discusses the potential of using exosomes derived from CSSCs for modulating inflammation, promoting tissue repair, and addressing corneal transparency. It calls for clinical trials to integrate CSSC-based therapies into clinical practice.
