Sonogenetic for vision restoration

Professor Serge Picaud supervised a study that, for the first time, demonstrated the use of high-frequency ultrasonic stimulation after ectopic expression of a mechanosensitive ion channel of large conductance (MscL) to activate the visual cortex. MscL was expressed in vivo in both rat retinal ganglion cells and rat cortical neuros of V1. Retinal and cortical neurons were successfully activated over millisecond durations with spatiotemporal resolution and acoustic energy deposit compatible with vision restoration. Sonogenetic activation generated a behavior associated with light perception, making it a promising and less invasive approach than current brain-machine interfaces for vision restoration.
