The European Hotspots by total citations in Eye and Vision Research are England and Germany. Furthermore, the Netherlands, Finland and Austria achieved the highest average citations rates. However, taken together the European performance could not come up with the total publication record in the USA.
Our wish becomes reality! At the beginning of August 2011 the ‘Gateway to Vision Research’ suggested the editors of Lab Times – News for the European Life Sciences, to implement a publication analysis on Eye and Vision research according to their deep knowledge in performing such rankings for all major biomedical disciplines. Now in the recent issue 7 of Lab Times from November 29th, 2011 their results are published (see www.labtimes.org).
So for the first time a European survey took place covering the period from 1998 to 2009. Our congratulations go to the European Top 30 most cited authors in Eye and Vision Research.

Interesting is the worldwide comparison of the publication performance with the comparable methodology described in the original article. Here Europe clearly ranges behind the colleagues from the USA. The latter produced about 13% more articles in expert journals, which attracted almost 35% more citations in total. The worldwide Top 10 ranking in Eye and Vision Research (1998-2009).

The two big European research countries –England and Germany- dominated the publication analysis in Eye and Vision Research. Adding the figures of England (1st rank), Scotland (8th rank) and Wales (15th rank) together, the United Kingdom clearly is the number one in Europe.
The gap between the first two countries and France, third in the list, is considerably wider than in most of the other biomedical disciplines analyzed so far (see www.labtimes.org/labtimes/ranking/index.html)

Last not least a word to our competitors in the field of bio-medicine. Looking at the total figure of Europe in research fields like neuroscience, cardiovascular research, dermatology or otorhinolaryngology it demonstrates that vision research performs very well in respect to other medical disciplines.
