Current Research Projects

Identification of neuroprotective factors which prolong survival of retinal neurons, especially photoreceptors in the context of inherited or age-related retinal degenerations. We focus on intrinsic factors which are secreted or presented by retinal Mueller Glial cells and investigate the relevant signal transduction pathways for neuron-glia communication. Additionally, we study pathomechanisms of autoimmune Uveitis in a spontaneous animal model (horse; ERU).

Methodology

  • Quantitative proteomics, both gel-based (DIGE technology) as well as gel-free (LC-MSMS) methods
  • Primary cell assays (photoreceptors, Mueller glia, RPE)
  • Protein interaction studies (TAP pull-downs, Yeast-two-hybrid screens, Biacore)
  • Mass spectrometry (MALDI-MSMS: AB4700, LC-MSMS: OrbiTrap)
  • Histology
